Purpose of this Document
The purpose of this document is to provide the installer with out-of-the-box type installation and setup
instructions for the PBXgateway II.
Related Documentation
For more information on PBXgateway II see the PBXgateway II System Administrator’s Guide. The guide
is provided with every unit.
Safety Considerations
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Do not install this product near water. Example: In a wet basement location.
• Do not overload wall outlets, as this can result in the risk of fire or electrical shock.
• Do not attach the power supply cord to building surfaces. Do not allow anything to rest on the power
cord. Do not locate this product where persons walking on it will abuse the cord.
• Do not operate the system if chemical gas leakage is suspected in the area. Use telephones located
in some other safe area to report the trouble.

The target audience of this document is anyone who will be installing, or configuring the PBXgateway II.
This may include network professionals, field service technicians, or system administrators.

Introduction
MCK’s PBXgateway II provides remote workers with all the features of your corporate PBX, from
wherever they are located, over circuit or packet-based networks.
Circuit Network: Voice and signaling information is sent out over a dedicated circuit such as ISDN and
T1. Once established, the circuit is 100% dedicated to the conversation.
Packet Network: Voice and signaling information is divided into individual slices of information called
“packets”. These packets carry their own individual identification number along with a destination address
of where it’s going.
Remote Voice Protocol (RVPTM) over a Serial Connection (RVP_Direct)
MCK Communications encapsulates the voice signal and creates a digital voice stream that is sent over
the existing data network. Voice encapsulation is accomplished through MCK Communications
Proprietary Remote Voice Protocol (RVP). RVP over a serial connection relies on High Level Data Link
(HDLC) encapsulation to transmit voice signals. In a traditional WAN environment, up to two EXTender
6000s can connect into the PBXgateway II running MCK’s Remote Voice Protocol (RVP).
Remote Voice Protocol over IP (RVP_IP)
Over a managed IP network, a combination of remote IP client units can be installed to meet your needs.
Up to 24 ports can be terminated at the PBXgateway II. Branch offices, teleworkers and remote call
center agents can be connected using standard IP network termination devices such as IP routers, DSL
or cable modems. As long as the IP network can be managed to ensure sufficient bandwidth and Quality
of Service (QoS).
Management Features
MCK’s remote voice solutions have been designed for operational simplicity. All of the system’s
configuration, management, and administrative and diagnostic functions may be managed from the
PBXgateway II using a direct serial connection, dial up modem, HTML, Telnet or an inband network
connection from a remote client.
Compatible Remote Clients
The PBXgateway II is compatible with many different types of remote units, with each unit having different
network and user requirements. Complete installation and configuration information is provided with each
remote unit in the form of a “Quick Installation Guide” (QIG). Please consult the individual QIG for
information not contained in this document.
ConneX Features
Note1: Only Meridian and Avaya have full support for ConneX features.
Note2: Norstar only supports MobileConneX.
The PBXgateway II, with ConneX features, is a multi-user telephony device enabling remote teleworkers
seamless connectivity and full functionality of the corporate Private Branch Exchange (PBX).
Teleworkers, usually working from an off-site location, can place a call through the corporate PBX by
simply dialing the number as if they were in the main office.
Note: Only MobileConneX is supported in Europe.

Single Users
Single remote users can connect to the corporate PBX through one of the following devices:
Analog EXTender 1000u for PSTN– The Analog EXTender 1000u is a single user device that enables a
remote user to have full access to the digital telephone features and functions of the PBX. This EXTender
enables a remote user to access a PBX port via a PSTN analog connection.
Throughout this document, the Analog EXTender 1000u is referred to as the EXTender 1000.
Note: Supported on Merdian and Avaya only.

EXTender 3000 for ISDN– The EXTender 3000 is a single user device that enables a remote user to
have full access to the digital telephone features and functions of the PBX. The EXTender 3000 enables
a remote user to access a PBX port via an ISDN BRI connection.
Note: The EXTender 3000 is supported by the DEFINITY and Meridian protocols only.

EXTender 4000 for IP - provides remote voice access to a corporate PBX for a single remote user.
Remote users can connect to the PBXgateway II via a 10BaseT Ethernet connection using IP packet
transmission. Remote users’ phones will connect into the remote module via an RJ-45 or RJ-11 phone
jack, and their phone traffic will be placed in IP packets and sent out to the LAN via a 10BaseT Ethernet
connection to the PBXgateway II.

Multiple Users
Remote offices with multiple users can be connected through the following device:
EXTender 6000, 8 & 12 user -– provides remote voice access to a corporate PBX using one of the above
remote clients for phone termination at the remote site.
