This manual is designed to help you troubleshoot and repair any

problems that may develop with the operation of the toilet. If a

problem occurs:

Refer to the Troubleshooting section to determine a probable

cause.

Follow the maintenance and repair instructions in this manual to

correct the problem.

Check the Service Parts section to determine the part numbers for

any replacement parts necessary.

Use the information on the back cover of this manual to contact

Kohler Company to order parts, or for help if you cannot correct

the problem.

1. Theory of Operation

Operating Features

Your Kohler Power-Lite toilet is a one-piece toilet that ﬂushes

completely and efficiently using only a small quantity of water per

ﬂush. The Power-Lite operating system uses an electric, motorized

pump to create a thorough ﬂush.

The Kohler Power-Lite Operating System consists of the following

basic component groups:

The vitreous china bowl and tank, which directs the ﬂushing

water ﬂow and houses the Power-Lite system.

The pump, which houses the motor, electronic controls, and

impeller.

The ﬁll valve, which reﬁlls the tank to the correct water line and

sends water to the bowl to establish proper trap seal depth after

each ﬂush.

The ﬂush button which initiates the ﬂush and reﬁll process.

Flush Cycle

The ﬂush cycle consists of the following steps:

When either ﬂush button is pressed, an electronic signal is sent to

the circuit board (which is safely housed within the pump).

NOTE: Both ﬂush buttons work the same and produce a full

ﬂushing cycle.

This triggers a timing sequence that turns on the pump motor for

a speciﬁc length of time.

The pump sends pressurized water to the front jet and rim

through the connecting hoses.

This initiates the siphon action in the bowl, and thoroughly

ﬂushes the side walls.

As the water in the tank lowers during the pumping action, the

ﬁll valve ﬂoat drops.

This turns on the ﬁll valve to reﬁll the tank.

While the tank is ﬁlling, water is also sent through the reﬁll tube

to return the bowl to the proper trap seal level.

After the pump turns off, the ﬁll valve continues sending water to

both the tank and bowl (through the reﬁll tube).

The ﬁll valve turns off when water reaches the proper water line

in the tank.

2. Safety Features

Your Kohler toilet combines outstanding function, comfort, and

performance with remarkable style and class. It contains the following

speciﬁc safety features:

Your toilet exceeds ASME performance standards for

low-consumption toilets.

It was designed with a large glazed trapway to keep waste

moving without blockage.

Your Kohler toilet is scratch and abrasion-resistant. It is crafted

from a clay mixture that is ﬁred at an intense heat to vitrify the

clay and fuse the glaze. Its surface won’t stain, discolor, rust, or

fade. Every component in your Kohler toilet is speciﬁcally

designed to increase the toilet’s useful life.

The pump and toilets are listed by Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL)

for safety. The ﬁll valve is approved by International Association

of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) for use in this

system.

The pump motor and circuit board are sealed in a housing

separate from the impeller (which propels the water). The motor

turns the impeller by a magnetic coupling. This ensures a

separation between the impeller and the motor with electronic

controls. There are no gaskets or O-rings that can wear out and

allow water to leak into the motor compartment.

Your new Power-Lite toilet is designed to be ﬂushed once every

70 seconds. This feature assures adequate time for the tank to ﬁll

with water and provides consistent operation of the Power-Lite

motor. However, a second ﬂush can be made 35 seconds after the

ﬁrst ﬂush. If you activate the second ﬂush at this interval, you

must wait 105 seconds to activate a third ﬂush. If you attempt a

third ﬂush before the 105 seconds have elapsed, the toilet will not

ﬂush. This is normal operation.

An overﬂow slot between the tank and bowl allows water to

drain into the bowl and out the trapway if the water level in the

tank becomes too high.

This toilet is available with an optional cover lock that prevents

unauthorized access to the tank and pump. This instruction is

written under the assumption that the cover lock is present. If

this option was not selected, then ignore steps associated with

cover lock operation.

3. Care and Cleaning

NOTE: See the special instructions below before you clean Artist

Edition products.

Clean the outside surface of your vitreous china toilet with mild soap

and warm water. Wipe the entire surface completely dry with a clean,

soft cloth. You may use soft abrasive cleaners when necessary to clean

your toilet. Do not use strong abrasive cleaners, as they will scratch

and dull the surface. Wipe any splashes of cleaner solutions from

plastic or plated surfaces immediately. Use toilet bowl cleaners on the

inside of the bowl only.

If the surface becomes excessively dirty, use a general purpose cleaner

such as: Fantastik

All Purpose, Lysol

Basin, Tub and Tile Cleaner,

Soft Scrub

Multi Purpose, Scrub Free

Disinfectant Bathroom Cleaner,

Clorox Clean-Up

, Spic and Span Liquid, Comet

Liquid Bathroom

or Bon Ami

Over time, hard water deposits may clog toilet rim holes and

trapways. To clean, use a commercial cleaner that is recommended for

removing hard water deposits. Follow the cleaner manufacturer’s

instructions.

WARNING: Risk of property or product damage. Do not use

in-tank cleaners in your toilet. Products containing chlorine

(calcium hypochlorite) can seriously damage ﬁttings in the tank.

This damage can cause leakage and property damage.

Kohler Company shall not be responsible or liable for any tank ﬁtting

damage caused by the use of cleaners containing chlorine (calcium

hypochlorite).

For Artist Edition toilets: Do not use bristle brushes or abrasive

sponges to clean the surface of your Artist Edition toilet. They will

scratch the decorated surface. Gold and Platinum used on decorative

products are like ﬁne jewelry. Use only warm water to clean, and dry

with a soft cloth. Do not let cleaners sit or soak on Artist Edition

surfaces. Rinse and wipe the toilet surface to prevent soap buildup. If

the surface of your Artist Edition toilet becomes excessively dirty, use

Glass Plus

or a liquid dish soap with water.

4. Connect Wiring to the Flush Button

CAUTION: Risk of property damage. Ensure that the ﬂush

button plug is completely dry before reconnecting. If it has been

submersed, wipe it down with a dry rag and let it dry.

Perform the following steps to reconnect the ﬂush button wire to the

ﬂush button:

Open the circuit breaker for the toilet.

Using the supplied wrench, turn the locknut in order to release

the hook and remove the tank cover.

NOTE: The modular jack and plug are similar to a modular

telephone jack and plug.

Align the modular plug into the modular jack of the ﬂush button.

Push the plug into the jack until it snaps into place.

Position the wire so it is above the full water level in the tank.

Close the circuit breaker for the toilet.

Test the toilet for proper operation.

Replace the tank cover.

Using the supplied wrench, turn the locknut in order to engage

the hook on the tank cover.

5. Unplug the Fill Valve

Perform the following steps in order to unplug the ﬁll valve:

Shut off the water supply.

Open the circuit breaker for the toilet.

Using the supplied wrench, turn the locknut in order to release

the hook and remove the tank cover.

Remove the ﬁll valve arm assembly by rotating it 1/8 turn

counterclockwise.

NOTE: Hold the cup ﬁrmly as the water pressure may be

unexpectedly high.

Cover the uncapped ﬁll valve body opening with an inverted cup

in order to prevent water spray.

Turn the water supply on and off a few times in order to ﬂush

out any blockage.

Shut off the water supply.

Use a damp cloth or sponge to remove any residue on the seal

diaphragm.

Replace the ﬁll valve arm assembly and engage the lugs.

Rotate 1/8 turn clockwise.

Replace the tank cover.

Unplug the Fill Valve (cont.)

Using the supplied wrench, turn the locknut in order to engage

the hook on the tank cover.

Turn the water on.

Close the circuit breaker for the toilet.

Test the toilet for proper operation.

6. Remove Fill Valve Components

Remove the Fill Valve Assembly Leaving Fill Valve Riser in Place

Perform the following steps in order to remove only the ﬁll valve

assembly:

Shut off the water supply.

Open the circuit breaker for the toilet.

Using the supplied wrench, turn the locknut in order to release

the hook and remove the tank cover.

Remove the reﬁll tube from the ﬁll valve assembly.

Grasp the blue coupling at the riser and turn it counterclockwise

1/8 turn.

Gently pull the ﬁll valve assembly clear of the coupling.

Remove the Fill Valve Assembly Including the Fill Valve Riser

Perform the following steps to remove the ﬁll valve including the riser

and hush tube:

Shut off the water supply.

Open the toilet’s circuit breaker.

Using the supplied wrench, turn the locknut in order to release

the hook and remove the tank cover.

Remove the reﬁll tube from the ﬁll valve assembly.
