Axiom Back
IMPORTANT CONSUMER INFORMATION
NOTE: This manual contains instructions for use with the Ki Mobility Back products. This
information must be provided to the consumer of this product. Do not remove this manual
before delivery to the consumer of this product.
Supplier: This manual must be given to the consumer of this product.
Consumer: Read the entire owner’s manual prior to using this product and keep on-hand for future
reference.
NOTE: Check all parts for shipping damage. In case of damage, DO NOT use. Contact the
supplier or Ki Mobility for further instructions.

A. Selecting the Proper Seating Product
Ki Mobility recommends that you consult with a licensed clinician (i.e. Physician or therapist) trained
in wheelchair seating and positioning before selecting any seating and positioning product. This will
help ensure you receive the right product for your specific needs. Axiom Seating and Positioning
products should only be installed by an authorized Ki Mobility supplier.
B. Become Familiar with this Manual
Before using this Axiom Back, you and each person who may assist you, should read this entire
owner’s manual and follow all instructions. Review the Warnings often, until they are second nature
to you.
C. Warnings
The word "WARNING" refers to a hazard or unsafe practice that may cause severe injury or death to
you or to other persons.
D. Check Your Skin Daily
Axiom Seating and Positioning products are designed to improve pressure distribution and increase
sitting tolerance. Whether the Axiom Back provided will meet your individual needs cannot be
assured in advance. The integrity of your skin can be affected by many aspects of your daily life and
medical condition, including the use of this product. Be sure to follow any skin care regimens
established by your clinician.
1. Users of this product should make sure their skin is inspected daily for changes. If you see
changes, discontinue the use of this product immediately and consult with your clinician. A key
clinical indicator of tissue breakdown is skin redness. If your skin develops redness, discontinue
the use of this product immediately and consult your clinician.
WARNING: Failure to properly select an Axiom Back that fits your wheelchair can affect your
skin integrity which can result in serious injury or death.
WARNING: Failure to perform proper skin inspection or continuing to use an Axiom Back after
skin changes are present can affect your skin integrity, resulting in serious injury or death.
E. General Warnings
WARNING: Do not use or install this Axiom Back without first reading and understanding this
manual. Please contact your authorized Ki Mobility supplier or your clinician if you are unable to
understand the Warnings and Instructions. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death.
WARNING: The installation of an Axiom Back on a wheelchair could affect the center of gravity
of the wheelchair. Changes in your center of gravity may affect your stability in your wheelchair,
resulting in tipping over or falling from your wheelchair which may result in serious injury. Always
review the instructions for use of your wheelchair to see if changes to the wheelchair may be
needed to provide sufficient stability after adding an Axiom Back.
WARNING: The integrity of your skin can be affected by many aspects of your daily life and
medical condition, including the use of this product. Be sure to follow any skin care regimens
established by your clinician. Consumers of this product should make sure their skin is
inspected routinely for changes as directed by their clinician. Failure to do so could result in
serious injury or death.

F. Protecting Your Axiom Back
Avoid prolonged exposure to adverse environmental conditions. This may include excessive
exposure to sunlight and temperatures, either hot or cold. This can result in the degradation of the
performance of your Axiom Back.
WARNING: Failure to protect your Axiom Back may lead to changes that can affect your skin
integrity, resulting in serious injury or death.
Although your Axiom Back has been manufactured in accordance with its labeled flammability
standards, you should avoid exposing your cushion to open flames or extreme heat sources such as
a burning cigarette. This may cause your cushion to ignite or emit harmful gases.
WARNING: Failure to protect your Axiom Back from extreme heat may cause your Axiom Back
to ignite or emit harmful gases, resulting in serious injury or death.
G. Cover Orientation
Your Axiom Back was designed to be seated in a specific orientation and it must be placed properly
in your wheelchair with the cover oriented correctly with the foam base. It is labeled to indicate the
proper orientation. See Fig. 2.
WARNING: Failure to properly orient the Axiom Back cushion and cover can affect your skin
integrity, resulting in serious injury or death.

Set-Up, Adjustment and Care
A. Fitting Your Axiom Back and Wheelchair
WARNING: The user of this equipment is responsible for making sure that it has been set up
and adjusted by an Authorized Ki Mobility Supplier under the advice of a healthcare
professional. The Axiom Back and hardware may require periodic safety and function checks.
Adjustments should be performed by your Authorized Ki Mobility Supplier. Always use parts
and/or accessories that have been recommended or approved by Ki Mobility.

General Setup
NOTE: If ordered with installation on chair, skip to Step 4.
1. Remove backrest shell from cover. Install backrest bracket to shell with stud plate (Fig. 3:A), two
washers (Fig. 3:B) and two dome nuts (Fig. 3:C). Install so stud plate studs are 1” from the top of
each bracket slot. Loosely tighten hardware. Repeat on opposite side.
2. Install housing (Fig. 4:C) to bracket with two bolts (Fig. 4:A), two lock washers (Fig. 4:B), two
washers (Fig. 4:D), two spring discs (E) and a nut plate (Fig. 4:F). Loosely tighten hardware and
repeat on opposite side.
3. Install backrest mount clamp (Fig. 5:B) to mount plate (Fig. 5:C) using two lock washers (Fig.
5:E), two spherical washers (Fig. 5:D) and a dual nut (Fig. 5:A). Bolts should thread inwards from
the outside of the chair. Choose bolts, from the two sizes provided, that adequately thread
through dual nut without coming up short or sticking out excessively. Loosely tighten hardware.
Repeat with second set of backrest mount clamps.

4. Install the backrest assembly onto the backrest mounts. See Fig. 6.
5. Visualize the user seated on the chair with a cushion and where the clamps will mount on the
backreset canes. Ensure there will be no interference with the backrest canes. The bottom edge
of backrest will typically fall between an 1" to 2" above the top of the cushion. Loosen the mount
clamps and install onto backrest canes. See Fig. 7.
6. Adjust backrest so it appears centered between the two back canes and both clamps are set at
the same height on both sides. Using a tape measure is recommended to ensure both sides are
set up equally.
7. Tighten all hardware enough so pieces are secured during travel or until user specific
adjustments are made later. Overtightening the back post clamp hardware may cause damage
to backrest canes.
8. Reinstall backrest cover. Remove and reinstall backrest multiple times to ensure alignment is
correct and all pieces are secured in place.

Custom Adjustments
1. Adjust the height of the backrest, if needed, by loosening the two nuts (Fig.8:A) on the backrest
bracket. Slide shell up or down to achieve desired height and retighten hardware. Ensure both
sides are set the same.
2. The angle and the depth of the backrest are adjusted, if needed, at the same time. Loosen the
two bolts (Fig. 9:A) on the bracket and adjust the angle and depth of the backrest in one
movement. Retighten hardware once desired configuration is achieved.
3. Tighten all hardware to 110 in-lbs except the acorn nuts which are tightened to 80 in-lbs.
Overtightening the back post clamp hardware may cause damage to backrest canes.
4. With no user in chair, remove and reinstall backrest multiple times to ensure alignment is correct
and all pieces are secured in place.
WARNING: Failure to properly orient the Axiom Back and cover can affect your skin integrity
which can result in serious injury or death.
WARNING: Failure to properly select the Axiom Back and cover that can be retained in the
wheelchair can cause you to fall from your wheelchair, resulting in serious injury or death.

B. Pushing or Lifting
WARNING: Do not use the Axiom Back to lift or push the wheelchair.
1. Do not use the Axiom Back handle to lift the weight of the wheelchair. It is intended only for
Axiom Back removal.
2. Pushing or pulling is considered improper use of the Axiom Back and may cause the Axiom
Back to unexpectedly detach from the wheelchair. Failure to heed these warnings can cause
damage to your chair, or cause a fall, tip-over or loss of control may occur and cause severe
injury to the user or others.
C. Axiom Back Transit Safety
The Axiom Back has been tested according to the dynamic test requirements of ANSI/RESNA WC-
4:2012, Section 20: Wheelchair seating systems for use in motor vehicles or ISO 16840-4:2009
Wheelchair seating - Part 4: Seating systems for use in motor vehicles. A complete system of
wheelchair frame, seating, wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint systems and a properly
equipped motor vehicle, that have all complied with the standards mentioned in this section, should
be in place before using an Axiom Back in a wheelchair that is used as a seat in a motor vehicle.
WARNING: Failure to follow all instructions for installation, use and maintenance within this
manual as well as the transit instructions listed below, could result in serious injury or death
when using the Axiom Back in a wheelchair that is used as a seat in a motor vehicle.
1. If possible and feasible, the rider should transfer to the Original Equipment Manufacturer vehicle
seat and use the vehicle restraints.
2. The distance between the top of the user’s shoulder and the top of the Axiom Back should not
exceed 5.5" (14 cm).
3. The wheelchair must be labeled as appropriate for use as a seat in a motor vehicle, dynamically
tested to the performance requirements of ISO Standard 7176-19 and installed, used and
maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. If the original wheelchair seat was replaced, the new seat must be approved for wheelchair
transit, installed and used as indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions.
5. When using your wheelchair as a seat in a motor vehicle the rider must be in a forward-facing
position.
6. The rider must use a Wheelchair Tie-down and Occupant Restraint System that complies with
ANSI-RESNA WC-4:2012, Section 18: Wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint systems for
use in motor vehicles or ISO 10542-1:2012 Technical systems and aids for disabled or
handicapped persons -- Wheelchair tie-down and occupant-restraint systems -- Part 1:
Requirements and test methods for all systems and installed, used and maintained according to
the manufacturer’s instructions.
7. Use of lap belts, chest straps, shoulder harnesses, any other positioning strap system or
positioning accessory should not be used, or relied on as an occupant restraint, unless it is
marked as such by the manufacturer in accordance with ANSI-RESNA WC-4:2012, Section 18
or ISO 10542-1:2012, Part 1.
8. Use of headrests, lateral supports or other positioning accessories should not be relied on as an
occupant restraint, unless it is marked as such by the manufacturer in accordance with RESNA
WC-4:2012, Section 18 or ISO 10542-1:2012, Part 1 or ANSI/RESNA WC-4:2012, Section 20:
Wheelchair seating systems for use in motor vehicles or ISO 16840-4:2009 Wheelchair seating -
-Part 4: Seating systems for use in motor vehicles.
