About this document

Scope and purpose

This user manual explains the purpose and use of the 6EDL_SPI_LINK configuration adapter bridge (or

“dongle”), which provides an interface from a PC USB output to a target board containing a 6EDL71x1 series

smart gate driver IC. This interface is used for reading and writing the configuration parameters via a PC-based

software application. A description of the 6EDL_SPI_LINK functionality, circuitry and firmware is provided with

instructions for connection and use.

Intended audience

This document is intended for design engineers, applications engineers, and technicians who use the 6EDL71x1

series gate driver.

Introduction

1Introduction

1.1 6EDL_SPI_LINK adapter

6EDL_SPI_LINK is a configuration interface or “dongle” for use with the 6EDL71x1 family of smart gate driver

ICs. It is connected to the USB (1.0 to 2.0) interface of a PC with a standard Micro-B USB to male A cable (1 meter

or 3 ft) supplied with the kit. It is connected via the 2x4 pin, 0.1”/2.54 mm spaced vertical header to a ribbon

cable also supplied in the kit, which is connected to the target board containing the 6EDL71x1 device.

6EDL_SPI_LINK enables read and write operations to the registers that contain the configuration parameters of

the 6EDL71x1, which include; the PWM switching pattern, gate drive configuration, onboard power supplies,

and protection functions. This adapter works with a PC-based application called the MOTIX™BPA Motor

Control Workbench, which is a Windows-based graphical user interface (GUI) tool available to download from

Infineon’s website.

The configuration can be loaded into RAM during product development and optimization or into permanent

memory using the one-time programmable (OTP) mode.

Attention: The J-Link programming port located on the side of the board is used only once during

factory installation of the J-Link firmware. Never connect any circuitry to this port.

All communication between an external microcontroller and the 6EDL71x1 target device happens through an

integrated serial peripheral interface (SPI). In this case, the external MCU is the XMC1402 device located in

6EDL_SPI_LINK, which acts as the SPI master. The SPI interface reads and writes to configuration registers of

6EDL71x1, which acts as the slave. Settings can be written to the volatile RAM or permanent OTP memory. The

SPI module is based on a 4-pin configuration, which includes the following logic signals:

Functional description

Data sampling happens during the falling edge of the SPI clock signal. All communication packets are

contained in a 24-bit shift register:

•7-bit address

•16-bit data

•1-bit command

Data is shifted in MSB first. Two commands are defined:

•1 –Register write

•0 –Register read

Figure 8 and Figure 9 show the details of the write and read operations on the SPI interface.

Functional description

The XMC4200 MCU (IC101) contains the factory-installed J-Link firmware, which provides an interface between

the USB data and the master MCU interface as shown in Figure 6. The master MCU interface is used to

download the 6EDL_SPI_LINK firmware to the XMC1402 (IC1) from the PC via the DAVE™IDE or Infineon XMC™

Flasher. This firmware is also factory installed but can be updated by the user if necessary.

The XMC1402 MCU can communicate with the MOTIX™BPA Motor Control Workbench software through the

master MCU interface and with the target 6EDL71x1 through the target IC (SPI) interface also shown in Figure 6.

Functional isolation is also included between the 6EDL_SPI_LINK target IC, ensuring that the PC is electrically

isolated from the board containing the target IC. This provides safety and avoids the possibility of damaging

the PC should any fault occur on the board containing the 6EDL71x1.

1. Install the Infineon Developer Center Launcher.

2. After installing the launcher, select the Manage Tools tab and locate the MOTIX™BPA Motor Control

Workbench to install on the PC.

Figure 12 Download OTIX™BPA Motor Control Workbench

3. Click the Start button to run the application.

Note: It is recommended to check regularly for updates and install the updates when they are available.

Figure 13 MOTIX™BPA Motor Control Workbench

4. Connect the 6EDL_SPI_LINK adapter to the PC using the USB cable. Note that the green debugger LED

(LED101) glows (pulsations may be observed, which is normal). If LED101 does not glow, it indicates that the

adapter or USB cable is faulty.

5. Connect the 6EDL_SPI_LINK to the target board and power on this board.

Figure 14 Verify USB connection and 6EDL_SPI_LINK basic functionality

Note: 6EDL_SPI_LINK may be warm to touch around the USB connector. This is normal and does not

indicate any fault.

6. On MOTIX™BPA Motor Control Workbench, click New Project to create a new project using the 6EDL71x1

configurator (see Figure 15).

Note: Older versions of the application support only the 6EDL7141; however, additional devices are

supported in later versions.
