Quidway® NetEngine 40 Series Universal

Switching Router Line Processing Units

Overview

The Quidway® NetEngine 40 universal switching router (USR) series (abbreviated as NE40) is

based on distributed hardware forwarding structure. In addition to route switching unit (SRU), it

provides multiple types of line processing units (LPU).

UR-LPUF

The LPU is composed of LPU module and physical interface card (PIC). It aims at fast

processing and forwarding of services and maintenance of link protocols and service

forwarding tables.

Functions of modules are described as follows:

I. LPU

zEncapsulate and process protocols used at the link layer (such as Ethernet II

and PPP).

zClassify and filter data packets to monitor user flow and access control list.

zManage and schedule data buffering.

zForward data according to the forwarding table.

zIdentify and send packets over control protocols to the primary CPU for

processing through non-line rate interface.

II. PIC

The PIC deals with the physical part of functions of a service interface, including

O/E conversion and processing at the physical layer. For details, refer to an

introduction of each interface board.

Type of LPUs

The NE40 supports 2 types of LPUs, LPUE and LPUF. LPUE does not support hot swapping

because its sub-card is fixed on it. Differently, LPUF is separated from its sub-cards (the

flexible card series), so it can be configured with one or two PIM cards that is swappable.

LPUE supported by the NE40 include:

z10/100M adaptive Ethernet electrical interface LPU (LAN)

z10/100M adaptive Ethernet electrical interface LPU (WAN)

z100M Ethernet optical interface LPU (LAN)

z100M Ethernet optical interface LPU (WAN)

zGE optical interface LPU (LAN)

zGE optical interface LPU (WAN)

zOC-3c/STM-1 POS LPU

zOC-12c/STM-4c POS LPU

zOC-48c/STM-16c POS LPU

zOC-3/STM-1 CPOS LPU

zOC-48/STM-16 CPOS LPU

zOC-48/STM-16 RPR LPU

zOC-3/STM-1 ATM LPU

zOC-12/STM-4 ATM LPU

zCE1 electrical interface LPU

zE1 electrical interface LPU

Swappable sub-cards of LPUF supported by the NE40 include:

z10/100M adaptive Ethernet electrical interface PIM (LAN)

z10/100M adaptive Ethernet electrical interface PIM (WAN)

z100M Ethernet optical interface PIM (LAN)

z100M Ethernet optical interface PIM (WAN)

zGE optical interface PIM (LAN)
