Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the HIOKI “Model 3801-50
DIGITAL HiTESTER.” To obtain maximum performance
from the instrument, please read this manual first, and
keep it handy for future reference.
Verifying Package Contents
• When you receive the instrument, inspect it carefully to
ensure that no damage occurred during shipping. In
particular, check the accessories, panel switches, and
connectors. If damage is evident, or if it fails to operate
according to the specifications, contact your dealer or
Hioki representative.
• When transporting the instrument, use the original
packing materials in which it was shipped, and pack in
a double carton. Damage occurring during transporta-
tion is not covered by warranty.

Safety Symbols
This manual contains information and warnings essential
for safe operation of the instrument and for maintaining it
in safe operating condition. Before using it, be sure to
carefully read the following safety precautions.
This instrument is designed to comply with IEC
61010 Safety Standards, and has been thoroughly
tested for safety prior to shipment. However, mis-
handling during use could result in injury or death,
as well as damage to the instrument. Be certain that
you understand the instructions and precautions in
the manual before use. We disclaim any responsibil-
ity for accidents or injuries not resulting directly
from instrument defects.
In the manual, the symbol indicates par-
ticularly important information that the user
should read before using the instrument.
The symbol printed on the instrument
indicates that the user should refer to a corre-
sponding topic in the manual (marked with
the symbol) before using the relevant
function.
Indicates that dangerous voltage may be
present at this terminal.

The following symbols in this manual indicate the relative
importance of cautions and warnings.
Other Symbols
Accuracy We define measurement tolerances in terms of rdg.
(reading) and dgt. (digit) values, with the following mean-
ings:
rdg. (reading or displayed value)
The value currently being measured and indicated on the
measuring instrument.
dgt. (resolution)
The smallest displayable unit on a digital measuring
instrument, i.e., the input value that causes the digital dis-
play to show a "1" as the least-significant digit.
Indicates that incorrect operation presents
an extreme hazard that could result in seri-
ous injury or death to the user.
Indicates that incorrect operation presents
a significant hazard that could result in
serious injury or death to the user.
Indicates that incorrect operation presents
a possibility of injury to the user or damage
to the instrument.

Measurement categories (Overvoltage categories)
This instrument complies with CAT III (1000 V) and CAT
IV (600 V) safety requirements.
To ensure safe operation of measurement instruments
IEC 61010 establishes safety standards for various elec-
trical environments, categorized as CAT I to CAT IV, and
called measurement categories. These are defined as fol-
lows.
Higher-numbered categories correspond to electrical
environments with greater momentary energy. So a mea-
surement device designed for CAT III environments can
endure greater momentary energy than a device
designed for CAT II.
Using a measurement instrument in an environment des-
ignated with a higher-numbered category than that for
which the instrument is rated could result in a severe
accident, and must be carefully avoided.
Never use a CAT I measuring instrument in CAT II, III, or
IV environments.
The measurement categories comply with the Overvolt-
age Categories of the IEC60664 Standards.
CAT I Secondary electrical circuits connected to an
AC electrical outlet through a transformer or
similar device.
CAT II Primary electrical circuits in equipment con-
nected to an AC electrical outlet by a power
cord (portable tools, household appliances,
etc.)
CAT III Primary electrical circuits of heavy equip-
ment (fixed installations) connected directly
to the distribution panel, and feeders from
the distribution panel to outlets.
CAT IV The circuit from the service drop to the ser-
vice entrance, and to the power meter and
primary overcurrent protection device (distri-
bution panel).

Operating Precautions
Follow these precautions to ensure safe operation and to
obtain the full benefits of the various functions.
Operating temperature and humidity:
0 to 50°C (32 ± 122°F), 80%RH or less (non-condensating)
Temperature and humidity range for guaranteed accuracy:
23 ± 5°C (73 ± 9°F), 80% RH or less (non-condensating)
Before using the instrument the first time, verify that it
operates normally to ensure that the no damage occurred
during storage or shipping. If you find any damage, con-
tact your dealer or Hioki representative.
Setting up the Instrument
Avoid the following locations that could cause an accident or damage
to the instrument.
Exposed to direct

Preliminary Checks
Before using the instrument, make sure that the
insulation on the test leads is undamaged and that
no bare conductors are improperly exposed. Using
the instrument in such conditions could cause an
electric shock, so contact your dealer or Hioki rep-
resentative for replacements. (Model 3851-10 TEST
LEAD)

Observe the following precautions to avoid electric
shock.
• Always verify the appropriate setting of the func-
tion selector before connecting the test leads.
• Disconnect the test leads from the measurement
object and terminals before switching the function
selector.
The terminals are not sufficiently separated. To
avoid electrocution, do not touch the terminals.
For safety reasons, when taking measurements, only use the
test lead provided with the instrument.
To avoid damage to the instrument, protect it from physical
shock when transporting and handling. Be especially careful
to avoid physical shock from dropping.
• To avoid corrosion from battery leakage, remove the
batteries from the instrument if it is to be stored for a
long time.
• After use, always turn OFF the power.
• To avoid breaking the cables, do not bend or pull them.
• The ends of the leads are sharp. Be careful to avoid injury.
Fit the protective pin cap when the product is not in use.
• Keep the cables well away from heat sources, as bare
conductors could be exposed if the insulation melts.
