Your

Bryston

preamplifier

has

been

engineered

provide

many

years

trouble-free,

highly

musical

lis¬

tening

enjoyment.

This

instruction

manual

refers

the

Model

12B.

With

the

exception

the

phono

inputs,

the

Model

11B

preamplifier

identical,

and

the

instructions

pertain

exactly

the

same

way.

Where

difference

occurs,

will

noted

the

text.

The

Model

12B

basic

signal

preamplifier

with

switching

facilities

for

all

the

sources

likely

used

even

the

most

elaborate

domestic

sound

system,

including

dubbing

capability

for

two

tape

recorders,

and

the

convenience

recording

from

any

source

while

simultan¬

eously

listening

any

other

through

the

speakers.

The

included

diagram

will

illustrate

the

switching

functions

the

Bryston

Model

12B

preampli¬

fier.

Phono

Inputs;

Including

Moving

Coil

The

Model

12B

supplied

with

internal

moving-coil

step-up

transformer.

This

extremely

wide¬

band

transformer,

with

almost

added

noise

distortion,

increases

the

voltage

gain

through

the

phono

section

22.5dB,

and

adjusts

the

put

pedance

suit

the

vast

ma¬

jority

moving-coil

cartridges.

(It

available

special

order

with

6dB

less

gain,

and

higher

input

im¬

pedance,

for

those

few

high-output

cartridges

which

may

perform

better

with

these

settings).

The

12B

will

also

moving-

magnet

cartridges

switching

the

transformer

out

via

switch

the

front

panel.

this

case,

the

cartridge

plugged

into

the

inputs

the

rear

panel.

The

inputs

(only)

are

equipped

with

input

capacitors

about

275

per

channel.

When

added

the

normal

turntable

wiring

capacitance,

this

yields

about

300-400

pf,

which

the

optimum

range

for

most

cartridges.

(This

internal

phono

capacitance

may

special-ordered

any

value

extra

charge).

The

Model

11B

identical

the

Model

12B

except

that

not

equipped

with

the

transformer.

Thus

both

.phono

inputs

become

inputs,

above.

They

may

selected

between

Phono

and

Phono

via

the

switch

the

front

panel.

(The

tranformer

may

retrofitted

any

time,

converting

the

preamp

12B).

Since

the

phono

stage

the

Model

12B

in¬

verts

absolute

phase,

the

trans¬

former

connected

invert

phase

also.

Thus,

cartridges

play

proper

phase

with

special

con¬

nection

necessary.

Tape

Monitor

Function

Although

the

12B's

tape

monitor

function

arranged

differently

from

most

standard

preamplifiers,

not

complicated

use.

The

two

selector

switches

operate

independently,

and

affect

only

the

outputs

which

their

labels

refer.

Thus

the

“MAIN

OUTPUT”

switch

used

the

tape

monitor,

also.

Include

yourtape

deck

the

preamp’s

tape

loop

the

normal

way

(i.e.,

its

record

head

connected

Tape

output,

and

its

playback

head

plugged

back

into

Tape

input).

Facility

Plug

This

obviously

allows

direct

dubbing

from

Selecting

“Tape

2”

the

TAPE

OUTPUT

switch

allows

dubbing

opposite

direction

reversing

these

connections.

External

Equalizer,

Noise

Re¬

duction,

the

tape

loop

(as

shown

the

diagram)

necting

its

input

one

the

tape

outputs,

and

its

output

back

(the

same

numeral)

input.

Turn

MAIN

OUTPUT

switch

(that

numeral)

"Tape”

wish

use

the

audio

proces¬

sor

the

signal

path.

During

that

time,

the

TAPE

OUTPUT

switch

used

the

selector

for

whichever

source

processed.

Turning

the

MAIN

OUTPUT

switch

back

this

source

position

will

bypass

the

processor.

Headphone

Jack

The

Model

12B

equipped

with

headphone

jack

for

convenient,

private

listening.

The

signal

taken

directly

from

the

output

circuit

which

normally

feeds

the

power

amplifier,

and

thus

controlled

the

volume

knob.

This

output

will

drive

head¬

phones

any

type,

but

lower

impedance

headphones

may

re¬

quire

somewhat

volume

control

rotation

for

the

desired

loudness.

facilitate

headphone

listening

without

disturbing

others,

the

preamplifier

automatically

dis¬

connects

thedirect

feed

the

power

amplifier.

(This

indicated

the

green

pilot

light

the

front

panel

changing

red

whenever

the

out¬

put

relay

opened).

This

circuit

does

not

disconnect

the

remote

outputs.

(See

under“RemoteOutput”).

Since

sqme

headphones

may

require

substantial

volume

control

rotation,

sure

reduce

the

volume

before

removing

the

headphone

plug,

you

may

startled

the

high

sound

level

when

the

relay

re-connects

the

amplifier.

Remote

Output

The

12B

preamplifier

equipped

with

special

remote

output,

which

switched

via

the

“Main

Output”

selector,

but

which

exits

ahead

the

volume

control.

This

line-level

output

may

then

used

drive

amplifiers

remote

locations,

with

local

volume

controls.

This

allows

remote

systems

function

inde¬

pendently

the

volume

level

set

the

main

system.

The

automatic

amplifier

disconnect

which

part

the

headphone

circuit

does

not

affect

these

remote

outputs.

(As

option,

this

function

may

replaced

second

set

main

outputs,

connected

parallel

with

the

first.

Thisallowstheconvenientconnec-

tion

two

amplifiers

which

are

desired

controlled

together,

such

subwoofer

installations,

passively

biamplified

systems).

Low

Filter

The

inflection

point

the

rumble

filter

has

been

chosen

lowestsignal

fre¬

quencies

likely

found

re¬

corded

music,

and

suggested

revision

the

RIAA

recording

curve

for

discs.

For

these

reasons,

and

for

the

important

reason

avoiding

low

frequency

transient

overshoot,

ringing

and

phase

mis¬

alignment,

the

low

filter

“minimum”

type,

with

6dB/octave

slope

below

cutoff.

This

quite

effective

reducing

subsonic

woofer-wooble

and

its

attendant

intermodulation

effects,

however,

since

the

most

problematic

turntable

and

warp-induced

rumble

frequen¬

cies,

the

area

2-5Hz,

are

reduced

average

about

20dB

factor

100

terms

power

demand.

The

low

filter

switch

active

the

In’

position,

and

affects

only

the

phono

inputs.

Mute

Switch

The

listener

often

called

momentarily

away

from

critical

lis¬

tening,

answer

the

phone

for-

example,

and

wishes

reduce

the

gain

for

short

time

without

disturb¬

ing

the

volume

control

setting.

The

mute

switch

reduces

preamp

gain

20dB.

Thus

the

music

may

still

heard,

but

background

level.

This

also

useful

for

changing

records,

cueing

the

stylus

manually

particular

song,

cleaning

the

stylus

with

brush,

etc.

The

mute

switch

active

the

'In’

position

and

affects

only

the

main

outputs

without

disturbing

the

tape

outputs.

Mono

Function

Occasionally

system

will

display

some

offset

gain

favouring

one

channel

over

the

other

due

slight

differences

speaker

efficiency,

differences

room

loading,

somewhat

off-center

listening

pos¬

ition

dictated

room

decor.

Thus

convenient

"mo.no”

the

signal

obtain

the

most

unambiguous

center

image,

convenient

adjust¬

ing

the

balance

control.

For

reasons

simplicity,

rather

than

having

separate

switch

for

this

function,

the

"Mute”

switch

also

connects

the

two

channels

Mono.

Obviously,

the

listener

may

wish

advance

the

volume

control

pro¬

vide

sufficient

level

for

establishing

center

image.

The

Model

12B

contains

output

relay

3-second

delay

turnon,

allow

transient

thumps

settle.

The

relay

opens

instantly

when

the

preamp

switch¬

any

power-supply

decay

artifacts

from

appearing

the

outputs.

The

relay

hermetically

sealed

inert

atmosphere

completely

eliminate

contact

con¬

tamination

and

provide

nearly

infinite

lifetime

(rated

tens

billions

cycles).

This

same

relay

employed

the

automatic

amplifier

disconnect

function

which

part

the

head¬

phone

circuit,

and

the

protection

mechanisms

connected

into

the

power

supply.

Whenever

the

pre¬

amplifier

under

power,

and

the

relay

open

for

any

reason,

the

green

pilot

light

the

front

panel

changes

red.

(Since

the

power-

supply

filter

capacitors

are

quite

large,

the

red

LED

indication

will

fade

slowly

after

fhe

preamp

switched

off).

Accessory

Outlets

The

12B

includes

three

3-prong

grounded,

120

volt

receptacles

the

rear

panel,

two

switched,

one

unswitched.

Please

observe

the

caution

printed

below

the

re¬

ceptacles

regarding

maximum

power

draw

from

these

outlets.

Large

power

amplifiers,

especially

including

the

Bryston

Models

and

should

not

plugged

into

these

receptacles.
