2.1.1.Introduction
OntheF11greatvaluewasalsoplacedonlightweightconstruction.Thiswasimplementedby
intelligentuseofhighstrengthmulti-phasesteelsandhighstrengthhotformedsteels.OntheF11the
averagestrengthofthebodymaterialshasincreasedby37%incomparisontotheE61.
Thelightweightmaterialsignificantlyreducesthevehicleweightand,incombinationwithastiffbody
skeleton,providesaconsiderablecontributionto:
• Drivingstability
• Fueleconomy
• ReductionofCO2emissions
• Passivesafety.

Highlights
• Castaluminumsuspensionstrutdome
• Highpercentageofmulti-phasesteels(20%ofweightofbodyskeleton).
• Highpercentageofhotformedsteels(9%ofweightofbodyskeleton).
Theload-optimizedcomponentdesignofthecastaluminumsuspensionstrutdomesreinforces
thefrontend.Incomparisontoconventionalsteelshelldesign,thecompactdesignhassignificantly
reducedthespacerequirementsanddecreasedtheweightinthefrontend.Thishasled,amongother
things,tomoreuniformaxleloaddistribution.
Thehighstrengthmulti-phasesteelsandhighstrengthhotformedsteelsensurelowweightwhile
providingmaximumstrengthforthepassengersafetycellthuscontributingtothepassivesafetytoa
highdegree.
Aninnovativeadvancementintheformofpassivecorrosionprotectionisusedonthehotformed
steels.Untilnowsuitablehotformedsheetmetalmaterialswithcathodiccorrosionprotectionwere
notavailableonthemarket.Developmentofpresshardeningtechnologyhasprovidedamass
productionprocessforproductionofgalvanized,hotformedcomponents.
Withthisprocessgalvanizedsheetmetalisfirstcoldformedandthenheatedtoatemperatureof
approx.900°C.Immediatelythereafterthecomponentsarecooleddowntoapprox.70°Cwithin
secondsdirectlyinthewatercooledpressingtools,hardeningthecomponents.Thisprocess
producescomponentswithaminimumyieldstrengthsignificantlygreaterthan1000MPa.
Componentsproducedinthismannercanbeusedinwetareaswithoutanycorrosiontothebase
material.Additionalcorrosionprotectionmeasuresareeliminatedforsuchsteel.
2.1.2.Materials
Modernautomotivebodiesmustsatisfymanyrequirements.Inspiteofminimumouterdimensions
theymustprovidethelargestpossibleinteriorspace.Passengersmustbeprotectedoptimallyagainst
injuryintheeventofanaccident.Thetorquegeneratedbyallassembliessuchastheengineand
transmissionissupportedbythebody.Moreoverthebodymustprovidehighstaticand,aboveall,
dynamicrigiditytoguaranteetheexceptionaldrivingcharacteristicstypicalforBMW.
Last,butnotleast,thesupportingstructureofthevehiclemusthavehighfatiguestrengthandbe
capableofrepairatreasonableexpenseintheeventofanaccident.
Tosatisfyalloftheserequirementsoptimally,BMWpursuesastrategyofproducingeverycomponent
usingthematerialbestsuitedforthespecificfunction.
Thetwoterms,aluminumandsteel,areonlythegenerictermsforavarietyofalloyswithhighly
differingproperties.

Multi-phasesteelsaresteels,whosestructureconsistsofanumberofphases.Highstrengthmulti-
phasesteelswithayieldstrength,Rp0.2,between300and600MPainclude,forexample,dual-phase
steelsorTRIPsteels.Highstrengthmulti-phasesteelswithayieldstrength,Rp0.2,greaterthan600
MPainclude,forexample,complexsteelsormartensitephasesteels
Hotformedmanganese-boronsteelsarehighstrengthsteelswithayieldstrength,Rp0.2,greaterthan
