Understanding the requirements of a multi-classiﬁcation

Avocent KVM secure switching solutions are custom

designed to support multi-classiﬁcation secure

applications. Your data will not be compromised.

You can safely switch between as many as eight computers

operating at different classiﬁcation levels, all from one

keyboard, monitor and mouse. The Avocent SwitchView®

SC KVM switches have been approved under National

Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) Common

Criteria to EAL 4+.

Secure Desktop Switching Applications

SwitchView SC switches

Requirement: A government analyst with multiple workstations needs to consolidate the workstations with a keyboard, mouse

and up to two monitors. Each workstation has a different security classiﬁcation and matching network connection (unclassiﬁed,

secret, etc.).

Avocent Solution: The NIAP certiﬁed SwitchView SC switch technology makes it impossible to transfer data between the

connected computers. Separate I/O processors control KVM switching and access to computers – an important factor for a user

who may access secure and non-secure networks from one point of contact.

In this application diagram, the SwitchView SC

1x8 switch is connected to unsecure and secure

workstations. To achieve the highest level of secure

conﬁguration, only workstations with the same

security classiﬁcation should be connected to

each of the SwitchView SC 1x8 switch port’s four

secure channels. The SwitchView SC 1x4 KVM

switch has two secure channels. Both switches

support PS/2 peripherals and VGA video.

Requirement: A government analyst needs secure support for multiple workstations that support USB-only applications, DVI-I

video, speakers and a microphone.

Avocent Solution: The SwitchView SC4 UAD KVM switch includes four fully secure channels isolated to 60dB. The switch

supports USB peripherals (keyboard and mouse only), audio peripherals and DVI-I video for resolution up to 1920x1200 @ 60Hz.

Requirement: A government analyst with

multiple high resolution dual DVI video workstations

needs to consolidate the workstations with a

keyboard, mouse and two monitors.

Avocent Solution: The NIAP certiﬁed

SwitchView SC8 DVI KVM switch includes eight

fully secure channels isolated to 60dB. Each

channel supports dual-head, dual-link DVI-I video

connections and provides the highest video

resolution available in a secure KVM switch:

2560x1600 @ 60Hz.

Secure Desktop Switching for DoDIIS Trusted Workstation Applications

The SwitchView SC4 UAD KVM Switch

Requirement: A government analyst needs to

consolidate a DoDIIS Trusted Workstation (DTW)

and a separate unsecure workstation with one

keyboard, mouse and monitor. The DTW consists

of a Sun® Microsystems Trusted SolarisTM Server

running the Sun RayTM Session Server software

and delivers the user applications to the desktop

through a Sun Ray Ultra-Thin Client. The DTW gives

the analyst access to multiple secure networks

(data, home directories, applications) of varying

classiﬁcations from a single desktop and is a client/

server-based architecture.

Avocent Solution: The SwitchView SC4 UAD

KVM switch includes four fully secure channels

isolated to 60dB. Each channel supports USB

peripherals (keyboard and mouse only), DVI-I

video for resolution up to 1920x1200 @ 60Hz and

audio peripherals.

In this diagram, the SwitchView SC4 UAD switch supports

the DoDIIS Trusted Workstation and the secondary unsecure

workstation with a DVI-I interface, USB keyboard and mouse, and

audio peripherals.

access to multiple targets within the same

classiﬁcation network and access to multiple

target devices that are connected to different

classiﬁcation networks. This application also allows

target devices to be located in a secure data

center or multiple data centers where the various

classiﬁcation networks can be kept separate.

switching system combined with the Avocent

AMX® matrix switch provides you with secure

access to three separate networks of varying

classiﬁcation levels. Each network user will have

three AMX user stations at the desktop connected

with a SwitchView SC switch to ensure data

integrity between the networks.
