1. Description
RIO600 is designed to expand the digital I/O of
ABB’s Relion® series IEDs and to provide I/O for
the station automation device COM600 using the
IEC 61850 communication. RIO600 allows
maximum I/O flexibility and provides a seamless
IEC 61850 connectivity between the substation
binary input and output signals with IEDs ensuring
improved functionality and performance.
RIO600 helps in simplifying and decreasing the
wiring inside the substation. The fully hardwired
traditional medium voltage switchgear /
substation control and protection system contains
a centralized rack room approach resulting in
extensive I/O wiring, connecting devices for
signalling between the switchgear base and
signalling to and from the external systems for
example, to the RTU or other higher level
automation systems.
RIO600 provides an additional I/O within the
switchgear itself, by using the Ethernet-based IEC
61850 horizontal GOOSE communication. The
signals can be transmitted within the switchgear
and to the higher level automation systems.
Similarly, signals from the upper level automation
systems can be executed through RIO600
connected to numerical IEDs.
2. Design
RIO600 is built on the industrial hardware
platform which provides the same reliability,
performance, and real-time functionality as ABB
protection IEDs, withstanding extreme
temperatures, electromagnetic interference and
stringent industry standards.

RIO600 has modular architecture with specific
functionality like inputs and outputs that are built
on the modules. RIO600modules can be stacked
on standard DIN rail to achieve the desired
configuration.
RIO600 consists of four module types.
• PSM_H - Power Supply Module
• LECM - Communication Module
• DIM8_H - Binary input module - 8 channels
• DOM - Binary output module - 4 channels
Two power supplies can be used for redundancy
purposes if there are less than 20 channels in
RIO600.
3. Configuration examples
RIO600 can be configured to operate a maximum
of 20 binary input/output signals using one power
supply module and up to 40 binary input/output
signals using two power supply modules.
The user-specific configuration can be adapted as
per application requirements by combining
different modules.

4. Self-supervision
RIO600 has built-in self-supervision feature which
continuously monitors the state of the RIO600
hardware and the operation of the software. Any
fault or malfunction detected is used for alerting
the operator. The dedicated LED is provided to
indicate the failure. RIO600 self-supervision status
is also distributed to the IEC 61850 station bus as
one data entry in the published GOOSE frame.
One of the output contact of DO module can also
be configured to indicate the status of RIO600.
5. Communication
RIO600 supports the horizontal GOOSE
communication of the IEC 61850 substation
automation standard.
RIO600 is designed to send and receive binary
signals to or from the ABB Relion® series IEDs
and the station automation device COM600 using
the IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE (Generic Object
Oriented Substation Event) profile.
RIO600 communication module includes a
galvanic Ethernet RJ-45 port for IEC 61850
GOOSE communication. The used cable type
must be at least Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
CAT5e.
Using the same Ethernet port, RIO600 can be
connected in parallel to PCM600 and a Web
browser over the same communication bus.
6. Indication LEDs
RIO600 is equipped with different indication LEDs
available on different modules.
• Ready LED on all modules
• Status indication LED for each binary input and
output
• Communication diagnostic LED on the
communication module
