1Remove the Piccolo xpress chemistry analyzer from its shipping carton.
2Place the analyzer on a level surface that is free of hair, dust, and
other contaminants. Do not place the analyzer near a sunny window or
any other heat source. Make sure the analyzer is at least 20 cm away
from any wall to provide adequate ventilation and access to the power
connection, Ethernet and USB ports.
3Check the components received with the Piccolo xpress against the
following figure to make sure you have everything required to set up
the analyzer.
Note: The shipping carton also includes following items:
USB cable, Abaxis Driver CD, Multilingual Operator‘s
Manual CD, warranty card, and accessory kit.
4Complete the warranty card and mail it to Abaxis within 10 days
to start the warranty period.
5Open the printer cover.
6Unwrap the paper roll, then unroll several centimeters.
7 Put the paper into the printer so that it unrolls from the bottom
towards the front of the analyzer as shown. Make sure several
centimeters of paper extend out of the printer slot.
8Press the cover closed until it locks into place.
9Pull gently on the end of the paper until it is taut.

10 Plug the power jack into the analyzer, then plug the detachable power
cord into the power adapter and into a grounded electrical outlet.
Note: To prevent power surges or drain, do not plug the analyzer into
the same circuit as a centrifuge or any other high-current device.
Abaxis also recommends using a suitable surge protector.
11 Press the power button to turn on the analyzer. The display then shows
the following:
12 Aer passing the self-test and reaching operating temperature, the
analyzer is ready to run the first reagent disc, and displays Analyze.
See “Quality Control Features” on page 6-1 of the operator’s manual for
details about the analyzer self-test. The analyzer may require additional
time to reach operating temperature.
13 Check the analyzer date and time to ensure they are correct. See
“Changing Date and Time” on page 4-15 of the operator’s manual for
directions.
14 Reference ranges are already preset by the factory. The range values
can be changed using the Customizing Reference Range feature
described in “Customizing Reference Ranges” on page 4-2 of the
operator’s manual.
Please make sure to be familiar with the
system before running any patient samples.

Filling the Reagent Disc

Using the provided 100 µL micropipette.
1Take a reagent disc out of its pouch.
Discs can be used directly from the refrigerator without warming.
2Attach a new tip to the end of the pipette.
3Fill the pipette without air bubbles or air gaps with sample.
4Tilt the disc to 45° with the sample port above the fill line, so that the
entire sample will flow into the sample chamber.
5Place the pipette tip into the disc’s sample chamber and release the
sample. Make sure to keep the pipette plunger pressed down until the
pipette tip is removed from the sample port.
6Discard the pipette tip into a biohazard container.
7Clean the reagent disc. Use a lint-free tissue to remove any sample
spilled on the outside of the disc, taking care that the tissue does
not withdraw any sample from the sample port. Dispose tissue in a
biohazard container.
Beside the micropipette, any other transfer device can be used to dispense
approximately 100 μL of sample into the disc via the sample chamber.
Note: When using lithium heparin whole blood tubes, gently invert them
several times before use.

Closer to Care.
1Turn on the analyzer by pressing the Power button on the front of
the analyzer. The analyzer starts up, then performs a self-test.
During the warm up time the display shows Warming. When the
analyzer reaches operating temperature, it displays Analyze on
the Home screen.
2Select Analyze on the touchscreen to open the disc drawer.
3Place the disc in the recessed area in the drawer.
4Select Close on the touchscreen to close the disc drawer.
5Select Patient or Control to run a patient sample or serum control.
6Enter an ID number for the sample (up to 14 characters), then
select Done.
7The analyzer then checks the disc type, and begins processing
the sample.
8When the sample is finished processing, the analyzer stores the results
and shows that the analysis is complete.
9 By default, the analyzer automatically prints the results of the analysis.
10 Select Open to open the disc drawer and discard the used reagent
disc into a biohazard container.
11 To analyze another sample, insert a new reagent disc and repeat
the above procedure or when finished, select Close to close the disc
drawer and to get the analyzer returned to the home screen.
Note: The Piccolo xpress chemistry analyzer accepts lithium-heparinized
whole blood, plasma, or serum for patient samples. Lithium
heparin is the only anticoagulant recommended for use with the
Piccolo xpress.

The analyzer features an internal quality control (iQCTM) system that
suppresses values and displays warning or error messages when a problem
occurs. The iQCTM conducts several quality and sufficiency checks with
every run while monitoring all technical components of the analyzer.
A suppression or warning does not necessarily mean that your instrument
has a technical fault. It proves that your iQCTM is working properly and
ensures that only accurate results will be released.
•The symbols ~~~ are printed in place of numbers when a result
cannot be determined. The result may be suppressed due to improper
mixing of a reagent bead with diluted sample, a nonlinear reaction, an
endpoint of a particular reaction not reached, a concentration outside
the analyzer’s capabilities or thermal stress. When a chemistry is
suppressed (~~~), the analyzer prints an error report.
•HEM, LIP, or ICT is printed in place of the analyte concentration if
hemolysis, lipemia or icterus have adversely affected the results.
LIP is also printed if both lipemia and icterus have affected a particular
analyte. HEM is also printed if hemolysis and icterus, hemolysis and
lipemia, or hemolysis, lipemia, and icterus have affected a particular
analyte. Examine the sample indices to determine if more than one
interferent is affecting a particular result.
•CONFIRM LOW RECOVERIES with an exclamation point (!) next to
every analyte indicates that at least one analyte has a lower concen-
tration than normally expected. If this occurs, re-run the sample —
if the message persists, the sample may be problematic.
•Warnings and error messages include an internal error code that will
assist the Abaxis Technical Support in diagnosing the issue. Record
the error message and/or print the error report (see chapter 5.2 of the
operator’s manual) before contacting Abaxis Technical Support:

Cleaning the Analyzer
Spills
Observe universal precautions when cleaning spills on the analyzer. Use a
10% bleach solution (1 part bleach plus 9 parts water) to clean spills, fol-
lowing the standard cleaning guidelines in “Cleaning the Analyzer” on page
9-1 of the operator’s manual.
Display
Clean the analyzer’s screen periodically using a so, lint-free cloth damp-
ened with a glass-cleaning fluid or window cleaner.
The screen can be disinfected using a 10% bleach solution: apply the solu-
tion to a lint-free cloth, then wipe the screen.
CAUTION: Do not use any cleaner containing alcohol.
Do not spray cleaner directly onto the
display — dampen the cloth instead
Air Filter
The air filter in the back of the analyzer should be cleaned at least twice
per year. Check the air filter more frequently if the analyzer is located in an
environment with excessive dust or dirt.
To clean the air filter:
1Unplug the analyzer and remove the power cord from the back of
the analyzer.
2To reach the filter, remove the air filter cover at the back of the analyzer
by pulling.
3Wash the filter in warm soapy water and dry it completely before
reassembling.
4Place the clean, dry air filter into its cover. Aerwards push the 4
clips back to their position on the analyzer.
5Plug the power cord back into the analyzer.
